The genetically modified sugarbeets were modified to constitutively express the coat protein gene of the Beet Necrotic Yellow Vein Virus (BNYVV), an important domain for encapsidation, vector transmissibility and cell-to-cell transmission.

The constitutively expressed capsid protein gene gives rise to a concentration of coat protein in every cell of the genetically modified plant tissue which is far below the concentration found in plants infected with BNYVV. The gus gene was inserted for the histological determination of a successful transformation.

As a result of the genetic modification a BNYVV resistance of the modified plants is expected.

The cDNA of the coat protein gene of the Beet Necrotic Yellow Vein Virus (BNYVV) is expressed under the control of the double 35S promoter of the Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV). The CaMV 35S-terminator is used as a termination signal.

Additionally, the gus-gene from Escherichai coli, in which an intron of the ST-LS1 gene from Solanum tuberosum was inserted, is expressed under the control of the CaMV 35S promoter. The terminator region of the nopaline synthase gene (nos) from A. tumefaciens is used as a termination signal.

The neomycin phosphotransferase gene (nptII), expressed under the control of the promoter and termination signal of the nopaline synthase gene (nos) of Agrobacterium tumefaciens, is used as a selection marker.

The introduced nucleic acid is integrated in the genome of the recipient organism at 7 - 9 insertion sites.
